Celebrating the Night Sky - Awareness of Light Pollution

"Celebrating the Night Sky - Awareness of Light Pollution"," Alive with wonder and sparkle and awe-inspiring beauty. Anywhere as long as the bright lights that humans deem necessary do not blot it out. I know there are those who say bright lights, big city. And on one hand, I don't fully disagree. But, do we need lights that glare so loudly we lose our vision? Do we need unsightly, glaring lights that keep us awake even when we want to sleep? Do our lights need to be so many and so bright that birds and insects die by the thousands smashing into them as they lose their way? And do we need lights so bright that the city can be seen from space as though it is on fire? With so many lights, with such brightness, we have lost the nighttime. Must we have to drive hundreds of miles away to get a glimpse of the night sky? And even when we do go so far away, thinking we're out of the city, we end up staying somewhere with bright glaring ""security"" lights, so we still cannot fully appreciate the night sky? I always want to suggest to these places that they do a couple of things, one, shield the light downwards towards the humans they fear and, two, that they put those lights on a sensor so that they only come on when needed. When I visited Kauai last year, once the night fell I went out on my balcony to look out at the night and the beach and was greeted by glaring Christmas lights wrapped around the two palm trees outside my villa. I was so disappointed, I said something to a couple of engineers who came into my room the next day to do some work on the air conditioner. It was late February and they joked that they wanted it to be Christmas all year. . WHAT'S UP
